PeaceBang Reviews Drugstore Brand Under Eye Concealers

Hey kids,

I hope some of you enjoy this.

To review,

elf HD Lifting Concealer
Pro: Works great. Con: Not a good range of shades.

elf High Definition Undereye Setting Powder
Pro: Sets your concealer like a champ! Con: Comes with a useless teensy brush.

elf Under Eye Conceal & Highlighter
Pro: The concealer is excellent. Con: The Highlighter is useless.

The winner is NYX High Definition Photo Concealer Wand.
Pros: Excellent range of shades, works great, blends, stays put without powder (although I recommend setting with powder for best performance).
Cons: The packaging has quality control issues: the lettering on the outside of the applicator wore right off in my hand.

  1. I have deep-set eyes and dark circles with brighter patches in the middle. I always hear I should go a shade lighter with concealer, but when I do it seems like the concealer just highlights my dark circles by reflecting more light on them. Any tips for application or choosing colors to prevent this?

[Hi, Kerry! It sounds like two things might be happening: one, you may be going a bit too light or choosing a concealer with too heavy a formula, or one that has a bit of a highlighting shimmer in it. Many people like that highlighting effect because it does reflect light, which is obviously not working for your skin. Look for very blendable matte formulas, do prep beforehand with some eye cream (let it set for a few minutes), and try lightly dabbing the concealer under your eye from tear duct to outer temple, let it warm to the skin for a minute, and tap-blend-press it gently with your finger, sort of pushing it into the skin rather than wiping it as you go. Apply lightly! You can always add more if you need to. If you’re not wearing foundation, it’s more challenging to blend, so I would recommend at least mixing a few drops of tinted moisturizer with your SPF moisturizer that you’re using daily (right?) to held with that blend. For your lids, which are also dark, I highly recommend a neutral lid color that will brighten your eyes on top, also helping with lower circles. I use Mac Painterly all over my lid for my “no make-up” days for that reason. A tiny bit of foundation applied with a brush is also great. Please let me know if any of this helps! If you e-mail me a photo I can recommend more specific shades.- PB]

  2. Thank you, thank you for this! I begged my mother at 11 to wear make-up over my dark circles. I was allowed to buy it when I was in the 9th grade, but I didn’t know how to use it. You can see these pictures of me with big white circles under my eyes. At the time, I thought it was a huge improvement – at least people stopped asking if I was sick or a chronic insomniac (which they do now if they see me without concealer – it makes that much difference.) I’ve been using Clinique for years, and paying the giant price because drug store concealers either don’t have enough shades or aren’t substantive enough to make a difference. So I’m eager to try elf and NYX. I also HATE foundation with a mighty hatred because it has made my skin look crepe-y and instantly adds 20 years. So tips on how to blend concealer better are also helpful. And also fun to feel like we’re gabbing about make-up.

  3. I have genetic dark bluish circles, and have discovered two things I LOVE:
First, Neutrogena Rapid Dark Circle Repair is a cream with light-reflecting particles you put on evening and morning, and for some crazy reason, it actually makes my dark circles fade a little. Miraculous.
Second, I did get some heavier concealer that would last all day, and really like Benefit Boing concealer. It costs about $15, and when used with a good brush, goes on smoothly and doesn’t budge (set with powder). It makes me feel much more awake looking.
I also use Aveeno CC sunscreen cream with pigment to it in place of foundation before putting on my concealer. [Thank you! Great recommendations! – PB]

  4. So I tried the NYX. It’s… okay. I think Clinique gives better coverage. But this is pretty good. [Glad you tried it! Everyone is different so I’m glad you wrote in. Clinique tests on animals. – PB]

  5. I couldn’t figure out how to reply to my above comment, but I did track down the NYX and I was actually pretty pleased with it. I thought the shade I got would be a tad too light (they were out of stock of the next shade darker), but it actually blended well and so far it actually seems to irritate my very sensitive eyes less than the Clinique I’ve used in the past. I don’t wear much makeup day-to-day, but it’s nice to have a decent concealer on hand for the days I do want to look a bit more put together. Thanks for the tips!
