Hi sweet colleagues.
I am very, very sad today. I am lifting up the life and ministry of the Rev. Georgette Wonders of Kenosha, Wisconsin, a Unitarian Universalist colleague of mine whom I did not personally know.
The other night, Georgette was at a late organizing meeting for a homeless shelter in her city. At around 11pm, she left the meeting and drove to a McDonald’s drive-through. As I understand it, Georgette dropped her ATM card and opened the car door to pick it up. It was late; she must have been tired. She took her foot off the brake of the car and the car moved forward. Georgette was critically wounded in the accident and died the following morning of her injuries. As a dear friend of mine said, “The Lord keep her.”
I have been thinking of her since I got this news. Thinking about her last sermon of April 6, which was about how to prepare for death. Grieving with her congregation. Thinking about those late nights at the church, or at the meetings, trying to save the world. Thinking about the meals grabbed on the go, the frequency of getting too tired or too hungry. The preciousness of life, the tragedy of such an accident.
I am taking a wee break from image and style blogging (like a week) and focusing on Holy Week over at the PeaceBang blog (PeaceBang.com). I am writing columns about how I understand Holy Week and inviting anyone who would like to to journey with me.
