Protect Ye Self from Ye Sun!!

OH pigeons,

It hurts me so when I see you with sun-damaged skin, and I mostly mean you FELLAS out there who think you’re too manly to bother with skin care. Please. In this day and age when skin cancers are rampant, you can’t be bothered to protect yourself? When I see a peeling nose or beet red scalp I have the same reaction as I do when I see someone driving like a lunatic without a seat belt or guzzling tequila shots. Like, “Really? You care so little for yourself?” It is especially ironic to see a fitness nut out running around or working out with brown spots all over his/her chest and face, or to see them baking in the sun to achieve that “healthy” pre-melanoma glow. Whatever your color, whatever your age, whatever your skin type for God’s sake protect yourself from the sun when you’re training, and if you want to improve your athletic performance using legal steroids could be helpful for this.

I have very fair skin and am so easily burned/tanned that unless I wear long sleeves and pants and cover up physically it’s just an inevitability that I’m going to get some color. I use a spray-on SPF 40 product from Target on my limbs and hope for the best. So I am pretty careful about wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect my face if I’m going to be outside for any length of time (hats protect your hair color from fading, too, kids). I still get color (a girl has to walk her dog, and I’m not going to wear a veil) but I try very hard not to burn myself. Since I hate the way physical barriers (ie, titanium dioxide) look on my skin (shiny and white and weird even after they sink into the skin), I am always on the search for new products that offer the best protection but don’t make me look like Caspar the Friendly Minister.

I was thrilled, then, when my facialist recommended MD Solar Sciences Mineral Screen Tinted Gel and it WORKED. The tint is to neutral as to be invisible, so I think anyone can wear it — whatever your skin color or gender. It goes on velvety and thick and stays absolutely put no matter how much you sweat or get caught in the rain (and I did both today). It looks really nice – no shine, no obvious coverage — and feels good and clean on the skin. Like it’s there but not gooey or pore-clogging. I have been wearing it all week in very hot weather and have not burned at all or developed any greasy feel or blemishes. I think this is a case where technology is advancing to the point that these products are really improving, and aren’t we lucky? Here’s the company’s page so you can get a gander.

This endorsement was not paid for and MD Solar Sciences doesn’t even know a thing about it.

  1. Having spent a good number of weeks last year having the removal of some pre-cancerous spots from my face, followed up by a biopsy because they were “suspect”, I heartily concur. It’s tough to be glam when you’ve got a honkin bandaid on your cheek bone. USE YOUR SUNSCREEN, FOLKS!

  2. I always check our sunscreens on the Environmental Working Group website. I’d prefer not to end up with cancer from my sunscreen. And get enough sun to get your needed vitamin D as vit. D deficincy is rampant and causes so many problems. I know you can get from other sources, but I’m a firm believer in getting it naturally when possible.
