Wal-Mart Chic

Alert pigeon Pastor HH wrote to me awhile back about this new blog, which takes Wal-Mart “couture” and styles it into cute outfits. Or, well, sometimes cute outfits.
Get a gander:

What I like about Pennychic is that (1) the gals don’t take money from Wal-Mart, so they keep their opinions untainted by corporate sponsorship and (2) they have fun with affordable clothes. These are mostly styles I wouldn’t wear, but that doesn’t matter. As PeaceBang is ALWAYS SAYING, we look at different outfits to get ideas, to get inspiration, not to “dress the runway” (copy an entire look from off a model in a magazine or runway).

These gals have spirit! Good on them!

  1. Very cute. Since discovering Fashion blogs a few months ago, I am so inspired by these women who put some thought into their outfits. They’re not just covering the top, the bottom, the feet, and going – they are experimenting with color, proportions, accessories, etc – and budget limitations are rarely a problem as the options have never been more affordable. I don’t really see myself shopping for clothes at Walmart, but I have become a big fan of thrift shops lately, and I feel more put-together than ever!

  2. I confess I like the White Stag label at Walmart for those basic “T”s in white, cream, beign…they never last more than a year before I stain them irreparably, and I don’t feel like I’ve thrown away a fortune on them. They’re a nice weight and cut quite generously.

  3. Some people just have a good eye for putting things together. I used to be like that, but don’t find the time anymore. I need to do that again!

  4. I try not to even darken the door of Wal-Mart. For me it is an issue of justice and labor exploitation. This includes discrimination against female employees, putting such economic pressures on suppliers that suppliers go out of business, carrying imported products made by other exploited labor, and putting local small businesses OUT of business. I realize the comment is highly political, but I try to think about where I put my money.

  5. I agree completely. I do not shop there either for the reasons you list-and I’m the referrer in this case! Because the point of putting together inexpensive outfits in a fresh way is an important one. Many of the readers of this blog cite financial concerns holding them back from feeling stylish. This blog shows that one *can* be fashionable on a budget. I think you can use the site as inspiration, then pick the retailer you feel good about supporting…
