Mid-Way Through Lent

Can you believe it?

How are your Lenten disciplines going, dear ones?

Some of you made them public here.

As for me, I’ve been seriously sick for a week now, which of course does not lend itself to exercise or eating anything but what people are kind enough to bring to your back door, but is certainly an aid to getting lots of time for reflection and thinking (okay, whining is a form of thinking!).

Other than this period of flu and bronchitis, though, I was definitely in the Lenten swing of things, which I find that I don’t wish to write about because no matter what one begins to say about one’s Lenten practice, it always winds up sounding haughtily pious, and that’s just gross. It reminds me of my Divinity School days, when seminarians would talk with great earnestness about their PRAYER PRACTICE:

“How’s your PRAYER PRACTICE going?”
“Ohmygod, I have the most amazing PRAYER PRACTICE.”

And I would step outside for a cigarette and think, “Dear God, please let me not say something scathing to these huge, irritating nerds. Thanks for sharing this time of PRAYER PRACTICE with me today. That’s about all the PRACTICE I have time for right now.”

Yea, I smoked back then. I was so pretentious I rolled my own cigarettes with a little rolling machine, carrying papers AND FILTERS along with my ‘baccy in a little Le Sport sac.

I don’t smoke anymore and haven’t for years, but I do talk to God in that same manner. Some day maybe I’ll give that up too, but I’ve been talking to God like that for so long I don’t know what form of address I’d transition to. Maybe cowboy style. “What’s up, Pardner?”

I say this because I’m wearing a cowboy hat, rain boots and a nightgown right now. So it’s obviously time for two more Advil and a nap.

Love to hear from you, pigeons!

  1. First, I had to go back and remind myself to what it was I had committed. Not a particularly good sign, I know, but I found that I didn’t do too badly. I even played hooky last week to spend the afternoon snowboarding! I was very proud of myself for allowing some fun into my week, even though it wasn’t scehduled. The best decision I’ve made so far this Lent has been to schedule a massage once a week. I gives me an hour of relaxation and something I can look forward to.

  2. I’m sorry you’re still sick. I spent the weekend nursing some virus myself and was truly annoyed.

I am surprised that I seem to know what everyone is doing for their Lenten devotion/sacrifice/whatev. I’m more of the “keep it to myself unless it is helpful to someone else to know” kind of person. I am hoping it sticks after Lent.

  3. cowboy hat, rain boots and a nightgown paints a wondrous mental image!

I am still working on memorizing the first Psalm (because I have a working knowledge of the other three we’ve used so far). Have not done at all well getting to bed nor drinking water; what I really want is a nice fume blanc…

  4. Poor you, get well soon! I guess you must be run down after a long and gruelling winter.

I’m doing well with Lent, just sitting in a strange sort of placidity (is that a word?) with things (mostly). I think some more sanity has crept in to my world view in the past few weeks… either that or old age is creeping up on me! Maybe both 🙂

  5. I’ve been a little lax in the walking, if only because it’s been cold and I’m a little lazy (oh, and a lot preggo). But the weather is turning and I’ve promised the dogs we’ll go on longer am walks. The water thing is going well.

The preparation for my maternity leave is going well and I hope to have everything seamed up by Friday. I really want to go through Easter, but I feel as though if I can make it through this Sunday, I’ll at least have everything I need covered.

  6. Prayer practice. Right up there with faith journey. And, tho not featured in my tradition but still equally pretentious: personal savior.

  7. Well I’ve been keeping up with the exercise so that’s good.
I haven’t had any ice cream but yesterday my partner in a weak moment bought 2 boxes of chocolate covered cherries so he gave me 1 so he wouldn’t take it home so I ate all 10 which was not good.
But I did make PB’s baked beans which were yummy although I don’t think they counteracted the candy.
PB hoping you feel better soon.

  8. Oh dear – hope you feel much better soon. ((PB))

Thank you so much for the encouraging comment on the last post – am still not smoking and have so far saved (well, spent on a pair of running shoes and a v. post GPS running watch) over £200.
Running three times a week is also going well, but have not managed to lose any weight yet (haven’t put any on either so, am quite pleased)

Blessings on all efforts made by all PB’s pigeons!

  9. Well I’m like veryerin and I had to go and remind myself what I’d committed to doing… oops 😛

I have got my body moving more but not yet at five times a week… but I’m working on it. I have cut out the pop for the most part but in a moment of weakness (and stress) had a small one the other day during a meeting. And I have been having tea instead of an afternoon snack. So I guess overall I’m doing okay.

Thanks for the reminder and blessings to everyone else in their commitments 🙂

  10. Three cheers for calling out the pretentious use of “practice” in seminary/church!
Sorry you’re still sick. Healing mercies, dear one. However, I also have to compliment you on the fabulous ensemble of cowboy hat, rainboots and PJs. Rock it, sister!

  11. Am doing pretty well with not eating while on the computer, although that I find it means I save the snack to have while reading a novel and so end up short on sleep. Or I skip yoga. Not good.
