Shelley O.

I just watched a Broadway at the White House special and was thinking about the beautiful First Lady.

Here she is as a teenager:

Obviously an awkward phase. But a good lesson in how brow shaping and the right hair shape (or wrong!) can make a huge difference in our look. That bright red lip gloss is nothing you’ll see FLOTUS wearing nowadays, either.

So beautiful. Love the color, don’t love the clingy jersey fabric and strange cut, but she’s radiant as always. Why don’t more dresses have sleeves that length!?

The awesomeness of that crisp white blouse is just beyond. Look how it adds so much strength and interest and character to what is otherwise a very preppy, classic look. You’ve got the pearls, you’ve got the flipped hair, you’ve got the big, friendly smile, and you’ve got this neckline that says, “I am a force to be reckoned with.”

This just in: Sarah K. alerted me to this AMAHZZING photo of the FLOTUS looking radiant and smashing and DEFINITELY not worrying about matching the wallpaper!! Wowza, Michelle! Show us how it’s done! What a recession-be-damned party of a presence you are!

  1. who cares about brow shaping and hair- that expression on her face (of determination?) says a lot to me!

  2. Too bad she cannot have her natural hair – I like the style – but it is “hell” to keep up or so my Black friends tell me. Have you seen the movie Good Hair?

  3. Mrs. O is, without a doubt, one of my greatest style icons. I am undeniably preppy (my friends always say my uniform is tailored jeans, twinsets, and pearls, and they’re not far off!), and her classic, preppy tastes with bold accessories and unique twists always inspire me. You’ve seen the blog about her style, right? It’s right over here at Mrs-O.org.

Love that sleeve length (“elbow”, intuitively enough); it’s practical, classy, cool (or warm!), and flattering.

  4. As a proud Canadian – I love Mrs. Obama! I think she’s absolutely lovely and a wonderful role model for women of all ages. Love that last picture of her – WOW!

  5. She reminds me of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (also a fashion icon) but for a multitude of good reasons.

  6. Have you seen this blog, dedicated to keeping us informed on who the First Lady is wearing on any given day? It’s in my google feed, and she is *always* looking fabulous: http://mrs-o.org/
