Pastor On A Date

October 23, 2009 on 10:02 am | In Miscellany | 16 Comments

So, a 30-something pastor wrote to me and asked me for advice about what to wear on a first date. Should I share my response with you all? I mean, is that a worthy BTFM topic? What say you?

  1. I vote absolutely. I think that balancing personal life and life as a pastor can be difficult; I have one thing that you wrote printed out: “You are one person, my doves. You are not two people: pastor and “real” woman/man… What you should do is strive for a style that expresses all that you are, including the wild aspect of your being.” I think that balancing those two aspects into one whole person is difficult, both in the sphere of being a pastor/minister, and in the sphere of being a person, an individual, with friends and a life of their own.

Personally, I’d love, love, LOVE to hear about this. I think that fashion is just one aspect of the balancing act (or merging into one whole, really) clergy-members experience, and I think the more we talk about it, the better we get at it.

    Just my two cents. <3

  2. YES! Please do! One of my girlfriends (also a pastor) told me that her babysitter said “Oh, it’s ‘Pretty Pastor’ when she went out on a date with her husband.” I thought that was cool, and it challenged me to think about thinking more intentionally about treating my time with my husband more as a date. I would be inspired by your comments too.

  5. Another yes from me. Not something I will have to worry about (God willing, weather permitting, as they say) but definitely a topic on which we should hear your wisdom!

  6. Yes! We also have to learn more about the first date to know what would be appropriate to wear!

  7. Big yes from me. I haven’t had a first date in years, thank the Lord, but I am curious about what you’d say. Both about the image presented to the “date” and the image presented to parishioners they may bump into. We were recently given wonderful seats for the symphony, and HALF THE HOUSE were people who belonged to my church!

  8. Pastors are people, too!
It’s a classic PB scenario– A rundown of how to look good enough for a date while still looking professional enough to accidentally run into a congregant and not feel embarrassed.

  10. Yes, please! Especially for those of us in denominations where we take vows of celibacy/fidelity —- how can you communicate “I have certain lines I cannot/will not cross” along with “I am not [entirely] a prude”?!

  11. I vote yes too. By the way, I am not a minister or planning any dates, but I love reading your tips and advice.
