It’s a Mag, Mag, Mag, Mag World

You know you buy the occasional fashion magazine, even if you wouldn’t be caught dead subscribing to one.
C’mon. You know you do.
Don’t be embarrassed! You should! They’re a great place to get ideas, to reject current fashions (skinny jeans? Uh, no, I’ll be sitting THAT trend out, thank you), to put your brain on hold for awhile while you let your eyes delight in all the Prit-ty, and to stir your feminist ire (oh my god, this isn’t really an entire article on SHAVING, is it? My, yes, it is. Because that’s what women should really be spending our time thinking about). It’s also just fun. Do not fear the fashion mag.

I get Glamour. I really like Glamour.
I got Lucky for a year because the subscription was, like, $4, but the vapid writing made me scream every time I read it (you can thank Lucky for trying to introduce words like “goddessy” and “glowifying” to your vocabulary. Barf). I like In Style but it weighs more than a bag of kitty litter, fer God’s sake. You can have Vogue and Elle — all ads and slouchy giantesses with smeary eye-make up and mile-high heels. They look mean and I get scared.
I pick up More on occasion but I don’t find it to be that much wiser or less boy-crazy than the other mags (and it irritates me NO END that More assumes that I’m married with children).

‘Fess up. What you got? Magazines? Catalogues? Paper dolls? Coloring books?

  1. I like In Style. I used to have a subscription to Lucky, but I got annoyed by all the ridiculous ensembles that they’d try to pass off as “for the office” daywear.

  2. Oprah has a great magazine with lots of helpful advice and good articles on all sorts of things. Love it. Read it cover to cover every month.

  3. I only buy fashion mags from the 25 cent bin at the Friends of the Library sale, because I consider them to have about 25 cents worth of content, once you account for the ads. More is one of my favorites, even though I’m still under 40 by a fair bit … I wonder if I’ll still like it when/if I reach the target demographic.

  4. I agree that the made up words in Lucky are annoying and ridiculous, but you can’t beat it for full on fashion, accessories, makeup & hair. In Style is okay but IMO the focus is too much on celebrities. I occasionally get PeopleStyle which is pretty decent for affordable trends.

I haven’t read Glamour in years but if you recommend it I’ll have to give it try.

  5. I subscribe to Cooking Light because it isn’t just cooking but beauty, health, and travel. My mom passes on her Lucky and In-Style, but I agree that Lucky makes me want to scream. I also really like Self for it’s balance of celebrity/style/health.

  6. Love “Oprah” but I make it a rule to only buy it when I’m traveling. Same for “More”. My only subsrriptions are “Real Simple” and a knitting mag- but look forward to “In Style” and “Glamour” while at the hair/nail salon.

  7. Magazines happen to me by accident, but I do enjoy the accidents. In my shrink’s waiting room, I enjoy “Real Simple” and “Cottage Living”. Pretty pictures of rooms and tips on how to have parties from the dollar store, and healthy snacks and 20 ways to wear the same cute sweater and handy bins for your horribly cluttered hallway… Very much the guilty pleasure.

The other accidental magazine spot is the treadmill room at the Y. Sometimes I forget my Christian Century – not at all frivolous – and I read the potluck that’s available. My favorite was reading “New York” magazine and finding a fun article the history of Jewish humor in America. They described this very fun website called OldJewsTellingJokes.com. They have videos of non-professional comics, just people who love telling jokes, and it’s great Jewish humor I could share with my Jewish father-in-law (who does a killer Jackie Mason shtick, btw.)

This is pretty rambly, but that’s the nature of mags, IMHO.

  8. I don’t buy them but I do read them at the hair salon. I have short hair so it’s once a month for me – that’s quite enough. I like skimming (not reading) Lucky, Vogue and In Style.

  9. The only one I subscribe to is Latina. I used to get InStyle many years ago, and W a few years ago.

Oprah is a good one, but I only read it when traveling. Magazines are just so expensive!

  10. I like “Oprah” and when I don’t have a subscription, I gravitate toward it at the grocery store and end up paying double. I discovered a year ago, though, that my Diet Coke habit can result in a free year’s subscription if I go to the Coke Rewards website and input the codes from my boxes. I just renewed my subscription this year, which means my guilty pleasure is even more fun because there’s no guilt! It even makes me a little less guilt ridden about my Diet Coke habit!
