The Full Day-Lewis Situation

Having just found, and reeled back in my chair from, this full-length photo of Daniel Day-Lewis and his wife, Rebecca Miller taken at the Oscars the other night, I just had to share the crazy:

the-day-lewis-situation.jpg

Gentlemen. Tuxes. To be worn with black dress shoes. Not … suede brown loafers to match the bad piping on the tux that should not be there in the first place. But it’s Daniel Day-Lewis. We forgive. Miz Miller. Gorgeous. Talented. There is no earthly explanation for the gown (did those flowers come from the set of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?” Are they CANDY?). But, Lord give me strength, do I see wacky, ziggy-zaggy black and white pointy-toed pumps peeping out of that hemline?

PeaceBang feels a little faint and invites us all to offset the potential cosmic disturbance caused by this ensemble by dressing in extremely classic, elegant outfits tomorrow.

  1. Ah, but he looks so handsome here and so unlike the grizzled character in There Will Be Blood… His face in this picture reminds me of when he first came to my attention 20 years ago, as co-star of the movie My Beautiful Laundrette. If you haven’t seen it, go see!

Tux aside, his shoes should match his hair, anyway.

  2. Have to agree on the Day-Lewis and Miller situation. Now, did you see the yellow frock on the woman in the background? scary. And I think she is stepping on her dress.

  3. Wow. Just wow. I heard a few years back that DDL spent about five years in Italy practicing the art of cobbling (making shoes). Maybe he (and Rebecca) only wear shoes he’s made?

They are an idiosyncratic and stunning couple; I guess if I were them I’d wear whatever weird thing suited me, too. *sigh* I love how they don’t even remotely match each other at all. They’re leaving that to J-Lo & Mark Anthony and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett.

  4. My sister and I were watching simultaneously over a distance of 3,000 miles. When I saw his wife, I texted her, “What is that woman wearing?”

My sister, bless her heart, immediately texted back, “One of those garbage bags with red cinch ties”.

I also want to run up behind that man and goose his behind so he’ll finally stand up straight and tall.

  5. I was eating dinner while watching the red carpet stuff… and when I saw that dress I was so socked I almost choked… and accidentally spit out some of the food I was attempting to swallow. talk about involuntary reactions.

  6. Now really, I don’t think that dress is so awful. It fits, it’s modest, it’s festive. Okay, so the bows should have been black, not red. At least the crystals are dark green, they do not do not jump out and smack you. I think she looks good in it. The shoes, I grant you, are a disaster!

And goodness, who does not love a man with the cojones to wear gold hoop earrings in both ears??
