I had always heard that using satin pillowcases keeps your hair all smooth and lervly, and then recently I read that it’s also better for your skin to slide around all night on satin rather than to get smooshed and creased by cotton or percale.
I finally purchased some satin pillowcases this weekend for three reasons:
1. I figured if I could avoid washing, styling and blow-drying my hair almost every day that would be a time-saver, ecologically better (hair-dryers use incredible amounts of energy) and easier on my hair — everyone wins!
2. Pillow face-creasing becomes more of a reality after 40, and
3. It had a kind of fun Zsa Zsa Gabor appeal.
Friends, I am hear to tell you that I have slept on satin pillows for the past four nights and my hair is as frizzy and scrambled upon waking as it ever was.
I don’t know if there will be any benefit to my facial wrinkling, as time will have to tell.
And I most definitely don’t feel like Zsa Zsa Gabor. More like Zasu Pitts.

But do you like the pillowcases? I tried the whole satin sheets thing and couldn’t keep the bed made, but I kept the pillowcases because I like how they feel.
And the only thing that keeps your hair okay when you sleep is tying a scarf around it or wearing a good hair net. Old-school.
I’d read that it was *silk* that had the positive properties, not satin. Satin is so slippery that I would think you’d have static electricity buildup to the point that you’d stick to the bed completely. 😉

Well, if you get desperate enough, you could just refuse to give up the pillow!

I never heard of a satin or silk pillowcase preserving a hairdo, but I have heard of women using them to protect their hair from split ends. Particularly women with very curly hair or kinky hair, which – even when short – is prone to ‘catching’ on cotton, and more susceptible to breaking off.
I have a satin pillowcase, but when I cut my hair really really short, it just got mixed in with all my other pillowcases in the wash.
I have thought about it, but now just go with braiding my hair, putting it up into a bun on top of my head, and tying a silk scarf over it all to prevent breakage in the night.
is there any harm in tying a satin rag then using a satin cap over it. is that overdoing it??
