What about the very simple long-sleeved, black velvet top? It’s like a long-sleeved t-shirt, only more elegant. Just plain black. No frills, no collar, well and simply cut, just a lovely sheen, and it goes with a lot of things. (Like nice black pants and a bright silk scarf at the neck, or a contrasting jacket and a string of pearls.) It’s a hand-me-down from Mama Divine, who can’t wear black any more and who has gotten a little thicker around the middle in her advancing (but still fabulous) years and who has taken to giving me a few of her well-cared-for blouses and sweaters.
Other than that I totally agree with you! No velvet till after Thanksgiving, especially if it’s crimson or green! (But then again, I’m one of those high-liturgy types who grumbles “Bah, humbug” when I hear Christmas carols during Advent. You can imagine how I feel about the Christmas music in department stores in November.)

Gosh yes,
Ann Taylor Loft has some lovely velvet skirts, but when I looked at them for too long, the air felt stuffy in an overly cooled mall.
