The Current Retail Hideosity

Do you all literally have your heads above water, at least?

Oh my darlings.
I struggle to find beauty and dignity to show you in today’s fashions but I search in vain. I find atrocity after atrocity: cold shoulder tops, crotch skulls, sproingy shiny fabrics that will burst into flames should you get within ten feet of a lit candle, VEST DISASTERS, random straps and zippers, Grommets For No Reason, polyester gauchos (GAUCHOS!), and the continuing tragedy that is leggings.

Try to survive this season of hideousness by freshening up your best classics. Try to sit this horrible era of retail ugliness out. The clothing being offered for sale at our price point right now reflects the hostility and ugliness of the era. Be strong. Save for one or two good pieces that won’t compromise your aesthetic values.

PeaceBang regrets that she never learned to sew.

  1. I spent nearly two hours last night attempting to find a few casual/smart wardrobe items (a well made cardigan to replace an old but tired favorite, some slim legged but non-legging pants, a few shell/t-shirt type tops that are modest enough to cover the kibbles, bits and bobs but well cut enough to hint at a waistline) and I think I’m just going to have to design my own. My cobbled together office uniform (LulaRoe kimono top, ASOS obi belt, Old Navy or ASOS tank, Chico’s travel pants, Merrell black ballet flats) needs an upgrade and it just doesn’t exist.

I’m middle aged, plus sized and I work in human/social services. I get that Frumpy McFrumpster is the designer of choice for many lines that offer 16-26 sizes but Le Sigh.

  2. I actually like that grommeted shirt. It’s not a work shirt but I’d wear the hell out of it on my day off.

  3. Julie, eShakti often has knit basics and while they cost a little more than Target, you can customize size and sleeves and they’re pretty flexible with returns. If you search “jersey tee” on their site right now you’ll find one on sale. (I have no affiliation, just a big fan of them as a company!)
