– In 2 weeks I have my Quaker Yearly Meeting. That is our regional jurisdiction conference. I’m on the Program Committee. In a position of leadership. Warm weather likely. A full day (8 am to 8 pm) of worship, workshops, presentations, more worship, and meals. I’m leading worship once. Moderating a panel discussion once.
A lot of work on my mind. Planning to take some down time afterwards.
But on the day of the event, I need to look professional and comfortable for a long day with possibly no opportunities for changing clothes. And some meeting spaces may not be air conditioned. Ideas for this guy?
I am looking at fashion blogs & mags, seeing what I might need to update, or if there’s some obvious new thing out there. I’m seeing a huge variety in hemlines and skirt shapes. Super mini! Maxi! Tea-length! Flared, pencil and even A-line skirts. Likewise, I see a lot of variation on pant legs and waistlines. Giant bell-bottoms! Above-ankle pegs! Mom-jean waists, hip-level waists! It makes me think there’s just a big transition going on. My source now is More magazine, geared toward professional women over 40.
Otherwise, the question I generally ask myself whilst dressing in the morning is: Am I bold and pointy enough? E.g., no round toes, cutesy florals, pastels, etc.
Feeling frumpy and lumpy and wishing I could work out what suits me and what doesn’t. I can’t even decide what “shape” I am! Sigh. I’m going to send you photos one day, dear PB. I’d love you to come to France and rummage through my wardrobe for me. I need a PB in my life!!! I hope everything is going well for you in your work. God bless.
Preparing for a big conference in DC in which I’ll have no opportunity to change throughout the days, need to look professional amid great heat and humidity, and can’t pack more than on my shoulder bag!!! This will be a challenge, PB. Ugh. I’m also thinking about walking through airports and conference centers and trying not to get blisters. Next month, I’m off to the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Yet more walking, trying to keep it together, etc. In short, as much as I love the work of these vital, beautiful gatherings and feel incredibly privileged to participate, I hate traveling while trying to look professional, unrumpled, etc. Sigh
I want to get the opinions of all of you about this dilemma. I too am in the pointy-toed, never rounded-toe, club. But I have a pair of incredibly comfortable “Sofft” brand round-toed shoes that, when dressed up with funky clothing, don’t look too frumpy or little-girlish. Brigid, I think those shoes are GREAT and I would wear them in a hot second! (I am 72 years old and tend to favor comfort over fashion, however, so that that into consideration.)
Brigid, I would wear those shoes. Sadly, they do not come in my size (I wear wide width.)
I think they’d be perfect with loose pants or longer skirts (maybe a slightly boho or artsy look?) but pushing frumpy with a conservative skirt suit. The red snakeskin pattern is part of what makes them weirdly cool – I feel like the plain version is kind of boring.
Two major events happening in September. I am, for the first time, visiting a federal correctional facility. The dress code is very specific, but I am worried about looking professional as well as feeling somewhat comfortable as I’ll be in a confined space for the better part of two days while visiting.
The other is our annual Diocesan Clergy Conference. The challenge is dressing to partake in worship, as well as a stroll of the grounds. Being comfortable but not sloppy. My suitcase will have extra clothing as I am committed to maintaining my fitness regime (such that it is) with morning and evening walks.
We meet in a chapel that can be quite drafty, so I’m thinking a pashmena or two may be appropriate. Decisions, decisions, decisions…
Cute shoes, but 3″ heels? I wouldn’t recommend them if you’re going to do lots of walking. Then again, you may not be pushing sixty, with arthritis in your hips and knees, like me…
