We’ll be doing at least one post, if not several, on the mistakes newbies are making in the job search! PeaceBang has been hearing a lot of excellent complaints from her friends who are in hiring positions and non-profit HR about inappropriate e-mails and phone calls (no one actually writes things on paper anymore) and Facebook messages coming in from young ministers seeking employ. Yes, this is a generational thing for the most part, and if your Millennial sensitivities can’t take it, you’ll have to avoid those posts when they go up.
Now: it’s predicted to be stormy and 90 degrees at the outdoor wedding I’m going to be officiating at in four hours. Please cross your fingers and send up a prayer to the weather gods (maybe Poseidon, since it’s right on the water) for this lovely bride and groom.
As a newly ordained minister who is emailing various people in my denominational hierarchy I am waiting for this post!
A few years ago, I sent out e-mails looking for a music director to a people that were recommended to me. One had less than a year’s experience as a director, a BA in music education and was not a keyboardist. Another had years of experience directing a church choir and music program, a Masters Degree in music, and was a great keyboardist. The first responded within a few hours of receiving the e-mail, with a resume and an enthusiastic cover note. The second had to be chased down for a resume, and then to my inquiry about setting up an interview. Guess who I hired? The sad part was, when I met the second person, she was lovely, and would have done a great job. But I still consider the person I hired to be one of the great “finds” of my career.
