A Silver Fox Rev. Updates Her Look

This is my dear friend and colleague, the Rev. Judy Clymer Welles, now retired. This is what a style update looks like, sweet people. If you’re doing a new headshot for your church foyer or website, this is worth studying. Click it to enlarge it, doll babies.

What works about this? EVERYTHING.

She has traded in her round, 1990’s specs for sharper, more modern frames. They look great on her and update her whole image. Judy grew out her hair to a fashionable long bob a la Robin Wright in “House of Cards,” and this could be the lighting, but the color is much cleaner white/silver than it was before. If you go grey, you have to pay attention to dingy yellow tones, which make your skin look terribly sallow and ages you. Using a blue shampoo can help; I liked Clairol’s Shimmer Lights a lot but I realized they’re not cruelty free, so I am going to try Shikai next time (I’m not grey but I do have light blonde foils that I need to keep from yellowing):

The earrings are fun and geometric. Do you notice how the angles of the spectacles and the earrings are clean and sharp (authority, strength) and the swoop of the hair and softness of the scarf and pop of color on the lips balance that with circular shape? There’s so much movement for the eye to follow, which makes Judy an interesting person to look at. You want that. Notice how the previous photo is all round and pink: the eye just registers pink, smiling lady. It does not command your attention like the new image does.

Judy’s make-up is great. There’s not a lot — just natural skin with a touch of berry lippy and some eye enhancements. I love the blue-grey scarf on her — it’s such a gorgeous color for so many different skin tones and hair colors. Always look for greys that have no yellow or green in them. Those are killa on anyone’s complexion. Judy’s scarf is even updated: the infinity-ish style and cotton texture is much more current than the paisley brown and purple scarf draped in that fashion.

Judy, here’s the Halo Of Praise I promised you, pal.

  1. I too enjoyed seeing Judy’s new look. She has always looked well put together, but this ups the ante – for all of us. Beautiful and in charge, Baby!

  2. Oh my, PB! Thanks! What you didn’t mention (because why would you?) is that I decided on this new look in preparation for my daughter’s wedding in YIKES a mere two weeks. No longer the minister who is celebrating the service, now I just get to be the Mother of the Bride and take delight in my daughter’s big moment. But I think the look is going to stay long after the wedding music has faded out.

  3. Wow, what a GORGEOUS update. Good going, Judy! You look like a totally different person — like you stepped out of 1986 into 2014 overnight. So pretty and flattering. A great inspiration for all of us! Blessings on your daughter’s wedding. (You may be stealing her spotlight though. Ha!!)
