Beauty Tips for Ministers

Just a Bit O’ The Primp
July 15, 2009 on 8:46 pm | In PeaceBang Halo Of Praise, Theological Reflection On Your Fabulousness | 1 CommentHi pigeons!
I came across both of these images on FaceBook and thought to myself, “Self, here is a great example of how a bit of the primp can really make a diff.”

This preacher gave a wonderful sermon on the Good Samaritan at a conference. She works for an Episcopal Community Service. That’s all I going to say by way of identification.
I think she looks very contemporary, love the glasses. She projects intelligence and serious intent. But I’m having trouble seeing her face well behind the glasses and hair and against the white alb (the photo comes from media coverage of the event, btw).

Anisa’s image, which I happened to see on the same page, projects joy and energy. The occasion is totally different, but even with her head down I can see her face and her features. If I saw her from a distance I might say to myself, “You know, I think that priest has got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in her heart, down in her heart to stay.”
Here’s what I think: I think that even if we’re bearing witness to painful realities in the world, it makes a statement on behalf of hope and faith when we look vibrant and have some o’ the shine to us.
I’ll stop talking like a leprechaun now.

One thought about the unadorned (i.e., no fabulous splash of color) white alb of the lovely lady in #1: as the preacher, it was appropriate for her to wear an alb, but if she’s not ordained, then in the Episcopal Church she’s stuck with plain white; a stole would only be for a deacon, priest, or bishop.
[Ah, thank you for pointing this out. Which is why I would ever-so-gently recommend some color on the face, which really does disappear against all that expanse of white. - PB]
