Mrs. Obama Wears, Not Takes, The Veil
July 10, 2009 on 9:22 pm | In Cultural Commentary | 1 CommentCripes, what’s the fuss? Michelle Obama wore a black dress and veil to meet the Pope. Totally aPOPEriate (heh heh, I’m here all night!).
The dress is a godawful, though. I don’t care if it is by Moschino, Benedict should have declared it unholy:

It’s good that the neckline is modest, but all that poof is way off. Our First Lady does not DO frumpy, but here she’s perilously close. The veil is fine; it’s like a mantilla. It’s called respect for tradition and I’ve got no problem with it. It’s not like she’s TAKING the veil. She’s just wearing it.
Here’s a photo of a line of Important Ladies lining up to see His Holiness. I love the variety of looks and expressions, and the woman in the big beekeeper’s rig is cracking me right up:

Remember, everyone, whatever the occasion: WEAR your clothes, don’t let THEM wear YOU.

She was given the guidelines for a papal audience, I am sure, so she knew to cover her arms and head. This link shows the ensemble better, I think:

(Do you think she hugged him?)
