The Uniform Project

This is just really cool. Spend a few minutes clicking through her innovative, adorable outfits. Some of them are a bit batty but it’s all incredibly interesting, serves as an inspiring reminder that clothing is art, and it’s all for a good cause!

Have fun! The Uniform Project

  1. Interesting project. I noticed one comment she’d garnered: “this is what Einstein did for his whole life. identical suits so he didn’t have to spend anycreativity on getting dressed in the morning and save it for other things.”

I’d never heard that before (apparently it isn’t true anyway: http://www.einsteinatoz.com/faq.shtml) – but I must say the idea is attractive to me. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not – I still have a mainly love-hate (or ignore-hate?) relationship with appearance and clothing. Of course UP is in fact expending a lot of creativity coming up with accessories etc.

  3. I think this goes a little beyond uniform. Some days she has on a whole other outfit–skirt, blouse–in addition to the dress. I guess it makes a good point about accessorizing, but to me it diminishes a message about not putting pressure on ourselves to look so dramatically different everyday. To me, the point of a uniform is to look great AND feel comfortable with some simplicity.

I resonate a little more with the brown dress project:

  4. Thanks, Sharon, for pointing us to the brown dress project. I confess that when I’m not at work, I very often wear my own de facto uniform, day after day. The uniform rotates, but it just never seems necessary to wash either pants/skirt and top after one wearing. And I just very much like the few items that end up rotating through the uniform cycle, and probably, I’m a little lazy–I love jumping out of bad and putting on the clothes I laid over my chair the night before. Don’t worry, PB, I’m not so careless about this that I look slovenly, and it’s not my approach to workwear. BUT, I have often wondered why I continue to buy new items of clothing when I so often return to my few favorites–which are usually favorites because they fit my shape well and are some color or fabric that delights me, and what more can you ask, right?–and both the Uniform Project and the Brown Dress Project ladies have inspired me to consider how I might be more intentional about paring down my work wardrobe to a few tried and true, polished but simple pieces that I could adapt with a change of scarf, earrings, hat or sweater. I’ve been walking around designing the perfect dress in my head for days…

  5. She is wearing a different pair of shoes everyday- not very sustainable.

  6. The sustainability component is not very persuasive, I agree. But I hoped you would all enjoy her creativity and obvious sense that your appearance is a work of art, which is what I’m always trying to emphasize.
