Nivea For Men: Product Reviews

March 6, 2008 on 7:34 am | In Product & Catalog Reviews, Tips For My Menfolk |

SweetieBang has normal skin that he’s been washing with Ivory soap forever, and never moisturizing. He’s in his late 30’s now, and after 15 years of sunning himself in Florida, it’s high time he started protecting himself with an SPF product (even though he now lives in far a colder climate, the sun still does shine with the same damaging rays in Massachusetts as it does in Florida).

We like Nivea For Men’s inexpensive (around five bucks) Extra Gentle Face Wash (I love that “For Men” part, as though I, with girly sensitive skin, shouldn’t even get near it or I might catch a fatal case of TESTOSTERONE)

but the bummer is that the Protective Moisturizer with SPF in it gave him a humongous zit,

and he’s not a guy who breaks out in general. So I’m still on the look-out for something protective and inexpensive that won’t clog his pores and cause him to look at me with patient but somewhat pitying eyes and say, “I’m just going to stick with the Ivory soap, ‘kay?” Me: “But the cleanser works great! We need to find an SPF product that won’t make you break out!” Him: “Okay, but I haven’t had a zit this big in my entire life.”

Also, gentlemen, what do you do with dry, flaky skin under sideburns? Can you exfoliate the skin under sideburns? As SweetieBang loses his deep, glowing, Florida tan (*sob*), his skin is peeling a little bit. He says leave it alone and let it peel. But we all know that PeaceBang is plotting better methods. A soft, dry brush? A masque? Aveeno exfoliating pads?

  1. My sweetie has sensitive skin, but slightly oily around the nose and forehead (is that called t-combination skin?). I beg him to wash his face, and he complies … erratically. But Neutrogena’s foaming face wash followed up with an Aveeno or Neutrogena light moisturizer just do wonders for him. We’ve had a lot of success with the Aveeno products for him. Well, I have. I don’t think he really cares.

  2. Oh, and I’ve learned that the best way to get his face cleaned is to do it myself. It’s sad, but true. He normally just doesn’t give a crap, but if I entice him to sit back and relax while I give him a quick two minute facial, he will oblige (kind of like how a cat will tolerate you petting it). Tip: He will actually look forward to it if there’s a chance of glimpsing cleavage! This is esp. necessary with the clay mask, which we do about once a month. I catch him at a convenient time - while he’s watching youtube videos before bed, or while he’s reading slashdot first thing in the morning. Then it’s not taking any time out of his day, and later on he appreciates the fact that his face isn’t itching or breaking out.

Unfortunately, I can’t get him to put

  3. I do like the Nivea products, but I’ve been a big fan of the Neutrogena men’s line for a while. Their SPF-15 moisturizer is quite nice and has never given me any trouble zit-wise.

  4. DHC has a sunscreen product that isn’t irritating to my skin — sweetie may be a different case.

  5. OK - this is not especially for men, but since it has no smell, why not? Olay moisturizer plus sunscreen for sensitive skin (not the regular pink kind, which has that distinctive “my mom” smell). It’s not expensive, not greasy, and never makes me break out like some other sunscreens do.

  6. Finding just the right product? We are not yet there.
Overcoming the “just-Ivory-soap-is-fine” disorder? We are making progress.
Here is how it works for us: Me:”Have you noticed how good N. looks these days? Just healthy and vibrant….oh! You know, I think it’s his skin; it’s somehow fresh and alive looking.”
You would think that this would not work, but it does. Everytime. For at least a month….

  7. I’ve been using the Nivea extra gentle line for a little over a year, now and I’m quite happy with it. The shaving cream is good enough to make me want to shave every day, which of course makes for a happy sweetie.

  8. both me & my hubby really like aveeno’s spf face lotion.

i’m not sure about under-sideburn flakiness, but sometimes I find myself with eyebrow dandruff and use a fine-tooth comb to back-comb them for a few moments, which does the trick pretty well.

  9. Yes, you can (and should) exfoliate under the sideburns.

One needs to be careful when doing things like exfoliating that it is not too close to having shaved (ouch!), but that having been said, I have used the Aveeno facial products (among others, including Zia and Kiss My Face) with good results. I use Aveeno shaving cream (the unscented kind for sensitive skin, and find that the colloidal oatmeal is very nice on the skin).

Generally, I shave in the morning, so facials tend to get done at night. When I got a spa facial, I shaved the night before so that the aesthetician would not encounter a scouring brush.

I also like the Body Shop’s seaweed moisturizer with SPF. Not “for men,” per se, but not floral either.

  10. I second (or third) the Aveeno recommendation. I have sensitive skin, and their daily SPF stuff doesn’t make me itch or break out, and the container isn’t too girly looking.

  11. For SPF purposes, I use the Gillette Facial Moisturizer, which has an SPF 15 rating on it. Doesn’t make Me break out, and I tend to react badly to some things.

I use some of the Men’s products from The Body Shop.
The Face Scrub did well when scrubbing the sideburns, and under the goatee when it’s cut short.

I also highly recommend the aftershave balms that The Body Shop has. No Razor Burn, Ever Again (even on a 2-minute-no-shave-soap, this-last-Mach3-cartridge-should-have-been-thrown-out-a-week-ago kind of day).

    [Excellent, Don, thanks! - PB]
