Hair often becomes frizzy as we get older, so the old wash-it-&-toss-it approach may no longer work. One way to get a cheap "conditioning treatment" is to slather on conditioner, put a shower cap over it, and spend a few minutes in the sauna.
Another out-the-door approach on dried hair is to put a bead of the waxy "hair putty" (I think your grandfather would have called it pomade) that goes on your finger tips, then you run it through your hair. Special attention to frizz areas. Do not comb or brush afterward. Or try the spray oil finishes, one spurt, run your fingers through, and you'll be shiny.

It's not just a conditioner issue. It's also an issue of GETTING A GOOD HAIRCUT, and not just every six months! What IS it with the split ends and bad hair?

There's a real lack of self-respect there. We can skip a few movies or lattes or buy one less item of clothing. Even when I was a doctoral student and living under the federal poverty level I managed -- I just didn't eat out and I didn't go to movies and I got a good haircut every month, or every six to (shudder) eight weeks when I was really broke.

Grrrr. I'm with you.
